This upcoming Shabbos is Rosh Chodesh Elul - the beginning of the Teshuvah process which will lead us to Rosh HaShanah (Day of Judgement), Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement) and finally to Hoshana Rabbah (the day the whole world is sealed for good or for bad).
It has been said that Elul is the preparation before the trial, Rosh HaShanah is the trial and the sentence, Yom Kippur is the appeal and Hoshana Rabbah is when the Final Judgement is entered into the ledger.
May we all use these upcoming weeks for Teshuvah (repentance), Tzedakah (charity) and Tefilah (prayer) - the three things that can nullify the harsh decree.
Be nicer to people. Give charity. Thank HaShem for all that He has given you. Learn Torah. Do random acts of kindness. Say slichos. Be more careful with Lashon Hara. Forgive an enemy and try and make peace. Weep. Reflect.
We are all Children of the King. That is why we say Avinu Malkeinu (Our Father, Our King). Reconnect to our Father so we may be judged as children and not as subjects under the strict letter of the law.
Amen.
